The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens has now been released together with the associated AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED. This new lens is a super precision lens with extreme sharpness.
The MTF charts for both the lens itself and the combination of the lens plus teleconverter indicate that that this lens is sharper than any of the existing Nikkor telephoto lenses. The 800mm lens with the teleconverter fives a 1,000mm lens.
Careful thought will need to be given before purchasing this lens. It is very expensive compared to the 500mm f/4 and 600mm f/4 lenses, in addition it will not focus as close as either of those lenses. I photograph bird all the time and I think in many cases the birds may be too close for the 800mm lens, I really enjoy stalking birds with a view to getting as close as possible, but for tiny birds such as wrens this lens may be just the ticket.
Nikkor AF-S 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Features:
An FX-format compatible AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR with the longest focal length in the history of NIKKOR autofocus lenses.
Constructed of two fluorite lens elements. The lens is equipped with two fluorite lens elements. The lens gives superior chromatic aberration compensation throughout the visible wavelength range.
The lens is equipped with two ED lens elements for sharp rendering and superior optical performance. Nano Crystal Coat effectively prevents internal reflections that cause ghosts and flare.
When the teleconverter is used with this super-telephoto lens, the electromagnetic aperture built into the lens enables stable exposure control with high-speed continuous shooting.
Equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) mechanism offering performance equal to an increase in shutter speed of approximately 4.0 steps*.
A lightweight yet durable super-telephoto lens with the adoption of fluorite lens elements, which helps to reduce the weight of the lens significantly, and a magnesium alloy, which ensures strength and durability.
Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED Features:
Designed exclusively for use with the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR. This teleconverter has been designed to produce images exhibiting the same rendering performance as the primary lens.
When used with the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR, focal length is increased by 1.25x for a focal length of 1000 mm (combined maximum aperture of f/7.1).
This is the first teleconverter equipped with an ED lens element.
