Nikon 1 GPS Unit

The Nikon 1, GP-N100 GPS Unit will enable you to tag your images with their GPS coordinates if you like to travel with your Nikon 1 V1 camera, the tiny GP-N100 GPS unit will enable you to remember where you took each image.

Sometimes I have a great deal of trouble trying to remember where I captured a certain image and this device is great to help you remember.

It will record all location information such as latitude, longitude, altitude and time and geotags the image data in the file EXIF field.

Nikon 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD Zoom Lens

Nikon 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f4.5-5.6 PD-Zoom Lens

The Nikon 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD-Zoom lens appears to be aimed more for the movie maker, using one of the new Nikon 1 cameras. This is a relatively large and heavier lens than the other Nikon 1 zooms.

It is a 10 times power drive zoom and provides a very wide range in focal lengths.

The  10-100mm zoom range is equivalent in 35 mm to 27-270 mm.

The lens has a retractable mechanism that will extends the lens, or fold it away to a very compact arrangement when the camera is powered off.

The following lenses are available for the Nikon 1 camera series:

  • 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 VR PD Zoom Lens - Wide range small aperture lens, 35mm equivalent is 27 to 270mm.
  • 10mm f/2.8 Lens - High quality prime available light lens, 35mm equivalent is 27mm.
  • 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR Lens - Telephoto zoom lens, 35mm equivalent is 81-297mm
  • 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Lens - Standard focal length zoom, 35mm equivalent is 27-81mm.

The higher aperture lens, f/4.5 to f/5.6 lens  is less suited to available light photography usage and the f/2.8 lens is a really nice prime lens for available light photography. There is not yet a large range of lenses to choose from for the Nikon 1 system and I guess more lenses will be developed with time as the camera system is still relatively new.

This lens combined with the Nikon 1 camera would form the basis of an excellent compact and light travelling outfit if you are not too keen on the larger SLR kits.

For a complete Nikon 1 systen you may need to get the three lenses 10mm f/2.8, 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR and the 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens.

There are now many images from this lens on the Flickr site.

Nikon 1 Nikkor 10mm f/2.8 Lens

Nikon 1 Nikkor 10mm f2.8 Lens

The Nikon 1 Nikkor 10mm f/2.8 lens is the only prime lens and is the largest aperture lens in the recently released Nikon 1 system. If I were buying the Nikon the Nikon 1 system, this is one of the must have lenses from my perspective.

This wide angle lens is so small and would complement the compact nature of the  new system.

This lens offers a 10 mm or 35 mm equivalent of 27 mm, in a fixed focal length, it will be ideal for building interiors and landscapes. In general I find that many prime lenses will give better performance than many of the zoom lenses and this is because they offer much lower apertures and give more capability for selective focus in many situations.

The following lenses are available for the Nikon 1 camera series:

  • 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 VR PD Zoom Lens - Wide range small aperture lens, 35mm equivalent is 27 to 270mm.
  • 10mm f/2.8 Lens - High quality prime available light lens, 35mm equivalent is 27mm.
  • 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR Lens - Telephoto zoom lens, 35mm equivalent is 81-297mm.
  • 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Lens - Standard focal length zoom, 35mm equivalent is 27-81mm.

The higher aperture lens, f/4.5 to f/5.6  is less suited to available light photography usage and the f/2.8 lens is a really nice prime lens for available light photography. There is not yet a large range of lenses to choose from for the Nikon 1 system and I guess more lenses will be developed with time as the camera system is still relatively new.

For a complete Nikon 1 systen you may need to get the three lenses 10mm f/2.8, 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR and the 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens.

Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens Camera

Nikon 1 J1 Camera

The Nikon 1 J1 is an intermediate automatic operation camera that sits between the Coolpix models and the DX Digital SLR cameras and on that basis the general images performance will be something in between these cameras. But the Nikon J1 will be a camera capable of much faster operation than both the Coolpix and DX camera but image quality may be lacking that of the Dx camera.

The image sensor of the J1 camera should deliver excellent images from the larger sensor than the Coolpix cameras and it includes a built in pop up flash which offers additional light when needed.

The J1 menus are easy to read and simple to navigate. The camera is available in a range of colours with the compact 1 NIKKOR lenses to match the camera.

The camera has what Nikon claim is the fastest autofocus in the world and the sensor can switch to Phase Detection AF or in poorly lit conditions will switch to Contrast Detect AF.

The new EXPEED 3 image processing engine in this camera is the fastest processing yet in Nikon cameras. It can process images at 600 megapixels a second and can shoot full resolution still images at up to 60 frames per second.

The Nikon Smart Photo Selector will automatically displays the best shot of 5 on the monitor and four more shots are saved for you to choose from. The camera recommends the best shots based on factors such as facial expression, composition and focus.

In addition to the capability for capturing excellent still images, this cameras has excellent capability for capturing superb movies.

Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens Camera

‭Nikon 1 V1

The Nikon 1 V1 camera I believe, is aimed essentially at Coolpix users who want to advance to something more capable, but do not want to move to a full digital SLR camera.

This model looking at the specifications appears to be aimed more at the enthusiast who is looking for a mirrorless small camera, as this camera is more oriented for use with manual settings.

Looking at the specification sheet it does seem to offer a very sophisticated performance, but is essentially a miniature DSLR, it would suit many photographers who only wish to print images up to maximuim 10 inches or 250mm.

This camera is extremely portable and is reputed to offer the “fastest focussing system in the world”, the focussing will instantly switch between Phase Detection AF and Contrast Detect AF to deliver excellent sharpness.

There is an F-mount adapter that attaches to the camera’s 1-mount to allow DX and FX lenses to be used. I really want to get hold of one of these cameras and the F-mount adaptor to try it with one of my longer F-mount lenses. It should prove interesting with the 2.7 times lens multiplication factor.

Another interesting feature with this camera is the new EXPEED 3 that is reputed to process images at an incredible 600 megapixels a second to enable the camera to shoot full resolution still images at at up to 60 frames per second.

If you look through the specifications of this camera, it is obvious that it pretty well offers all the features of the fully fledged DX and FX digital SLR cameras in a smaller package but with reduced pixel count and obviously provides equivalent performance, but at lower ISO levels.

In addition to the capability for capturing excellent still images, this cameras has excellent capability for capturing superb movies.

New Nikon 1 CX Lens Mount

Nikon 1 V1

This is the new Nikon 1 lens mount which has been introduced on the innovative Nikon 1, V1 and J1 cameras.

Why introduce a new mount?

The new cameras are a mirrorless format without the bulk of the Digital SLR mirror arrangement, being much more smaller than a full DSLR as the lens flange to sensor distance is much reduced resulting in a much smaller camera. There are quite a few advantages and disadvantages of a camera such as this compared to the full DSLR.

The very interesting thing about this new mount is that there is an adaptor to allow the older Nikon full frame FX and also the smaller format DX lenses to be used with the new mirrorless cameras

Advantages of the Mirrorless Format

  • Small physical size, can live in your pocket when not being used.
  • Small weight and easy to carry.
  • There would be no problem in taking this camera everywhere you go.
  • Silent operation due to no mirror noise, has excellent possibility to be used in stage shows and any other events where allowed.
  • Can use DX and FX lenses if you have any of these lenses with an adaptor, the camera has a lens multiplication factor of 2.7, thus a 70-200mm lens becomes an effective 190-540mm lens. A 500mm lens becomes an effective 1350mm.
  • This camera can also be regarded as a part of your Nikon system if you have FX or DX lenses.
  • This camera will be a great compact movie camera for High Definition movies.
  • Greatly improved image quality from the existing range of smaller sensor Coolpix cameras.

Disadvantages of the Mirrorless Format

  • No optical viewfinder, but there is an electronic viewfinder.
  • Focussing with any action shots may not be as precise and fast as the Digital SLR range of cameras ( I am not sure of this issue until I actually get my hands on one to try it out, Nikon claim it is the fastest auto focus in the world).
  • Higher pixel density with smaller pixels and probably more image noise as a result.

I was not too keen on the idea of this mirrorless camera format when I first heard the rumors of it, however the more I think about it, and weigh up the pros and cons of the camera, the more I am thinking that I may like the idea and find a use for it.

The technology in this camera does have the potential to be developed into the larger camera ranges such as the DX and FX formats as mirrorless DX and FX formats in the future without any changes to the existing DX and FX lens mounts, as time progresses.

We have a lot to look forward to with these new digital camera developments.
