Canon Camera Reviews, Recommendations, Sample Images and Articles

The following links summarise details and reviews of Canon cameras on this site. We are adding to the reviews continually, so come back on a regular basis to see the latest reviews. These cameras are listed from the cheapest price to the most expensive in each category.

In the following I will attempt to outline some criteria to help you select a Canon camera.

  • EF-S mount versus EF mount – EF-S mount cameras are cheaper and the EF-S lenses are generally cheaper. For print sizes up to a maximum dimension of 15 inches there is not very much difference in EF-S and EF. But for print sizes above this a full frame camera may be of advantage.
  • EF-S cameras give an effective lens multiplication factor of 1.6 times to the lens focal length, which is an advantage with long lenses, but this can also be a disadvantage with wide angle lenses. However there are special wide angle lenses for EF-S cameras.
  • EF cameras generally give better performance in low light situations.
  • Some cameras now have a movie function so consider this carefully in your selection.
  • Some of the more expensive cameras have additional functionality, such as depth of field preview, mirror lock up, different bracketing functions for white balance and exposure, magnesium alloy bodies, weather sealing etc. So consider your shooting conditions.
  • In general, I would rate all the EF cameras as professional tools in an expert photographers hands.
  • The EF-S lens mount is a derivative of the EF lens mount which has been created for a subset of Canon digital single lens reflex cameras with APS-C sized image sensors.
  • The EF-S camera flange focal distance is 44.0 mm.
  • Cameras supporting EF-S, however, have more clearance with the mirror workings, allowing lens elements to be closer to the sensor than in the EF mount.
  • Only Canon cameras with the APS-C sized sensor released after 2003 support the EF-S mount.
  • The “S” in EF-S stands for “short back focus”, which means that the rear element of the lens is closer to the image sensor than on regular Canon 35 mm SLR cameras.
  • The proximity of the rear element to the image sensor, will greatly enhance the possibility for wide angle and very wide angle lenses, enabling them to be made smaller, lighter, with larger aperture and less expensive.
  • Most current Canon EF-S lenses are wide angle. If telephoto lenses are required choose an EF telephoto lens.
  • The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV camera has a sensor which give an effective lens focal length multiplication factor of 1.3 times.
