Adding teleconverters to your lens can add great versatility to your photographic opportunities and is a far cheaper alternative than purchasing the longer lens. You need to keep in mind that using a teleconverter will reduce the aperture of your lens as discussed below:

  • The Teleconverter TC-14E 1.4x II  reduces the aperture of the lens by 1 stop and gives a focal length multiplication factor of 1.4 times the normal focal length. This teleconverter give the best optical performance of all the teleconverters covered in this review. This is due to the fact that the teleconverter increases, or magnifies any imperfections in the lens it is being used on but this effect is quite small and may be hardly noticable especially on the lower aperture lenses.
  •  The Teleconverter TC-17E 1.7x II reduces the aperture by 1.5 stops and gives a focal length multiplication factor of 1.7 times the normal focal length of the lens. The teleconverter performs well on most lenses.
  • The Teleconverter TC-20E 2.0x III reduces the aperture of the main lens by 2 stops and will give a focal length multiplication factor of 1.7 times the normal focal length of the lens. This teleconverter has the most degradation of the three but it may not be noticable on most prime lenses.

Lens Performance With Teleconverters

  • 105mm f/2.8G IF ED VR AF-S Micro. This close up Micro lens performs very well with the 1.4x teleconverter but may have some difficulty in focussing when using the 1.7x and 2.0x teleconverter.
  • 200mm 2.0G ED AF-S VR II. This lens performes extremely well with all teleconverters.
  • 200-400mm f/4G ED ASF-S VR II. This zoom lens will perform well with the 1.4x teleconverter but may have some difficulty in focussing with the 1.7x and 2.0x teleconverters.
  • 300mm f/4D IF ED AF-S. This lens is good optically with all the teleconverters but can have some difficulty in focussing with the other teleconverters, particularly the 2.0x teleconverter.
  • 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S. This lens performes extremely well with all teleconverters.
  • 400mm f/2.8G ED VR. This lens is a superb performer with all the teleconvertes.
  • 500mm f/4G ED VR. This lens is good optically with all the teleconverters but can have some difficulty in focussing with the other teleconverters, particularly the 2.0x teleconverter.
  • 600mm f/4G ED VR, This lens is good optically with all the teleconverters but can have some difficulty in focussing with the other teleconverters, particularly the 2.0x teleconverter.

In view of the above comments the use of all the teleconverters can be a very useful option to have with your long lenses and it can change what may be a barely obtainable image to an image which becomes one of your prize winning images.
