Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens
The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens is an ultra wide angle zoom lens.
It is an exceptional lens for creative photographers to be able to get a wide view of the world. It is only suitable for all EF-S mount digital EOS cameras.
With its large aperture of f/3.5 for an ultra wide lens such as this, the creative photographer can use the large aperture to create excellent separation between subject and background.
I love using a lens of this focal length range, particularly for landscape images. The lens has a variable aperture over its focal length range, f/3.5 at the wide end and f/4.5 at the longer end. With a lens such as this you need to be careful of distortion, however with care, beautiful images can be obtained. In my opinion large aperture lenses are not required at these focal lengths.
This lens is also suitable for the interiors of both small and large buildings, but keep in mind that there may be distortion of vertical walls if the camera is not held straight..
Also with this type of lens it will pay to be aware of any stray light sources to ensure there is no flare. Any flare may also cause some loss of contrast in the image but these effects can again be avoided by careful observation of the light sources in the viewfinder and looking for any unidentified flaring objects.
Ultra wide angle lenses can really make the subject pop and quite a lot of practice is required to get the best advantage out of your super wide angle lens. One of the biggest mistakes in photography is getting too much in the frame and having unwanted elements cluttering up the image. It can be very useful to have a dominant foreground with wide angle images, this will help to give the image depth and more of a three dimensional look.
One of the advantages of wide angle lenses such as this, is that they give a great depth of field and also enable close focussing. Sometimes getting physically close to the subject is an excellent way to eliminate any unwanted clutter in the image.
There ae quite a few lenses to choose from in this category as follows:
- EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens - Ultra wide angle lens with variable aperture
- EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens - Wide angle variable large aperture lens
- EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens - Fixed large aperture low light zoom
- EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens - Wide angle variable large aperture lens
- EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - Wide focal length variable large aperture lens
- EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - Wide focal length range variable large aperture lens
- EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens - Low aperture macro lens
In general this wide angle lens can be hand held at relatively slow shutter speeds, down to around 1/10 sec quite easily with some practice.
For the keen landscape photographer using EF-S lenses with the smaller sensor Canon camera this lens would be excellent.
