Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Zoom Lens
The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Zoom Autofocus Lens is an excellent choice for a standard lens with its f/2.8 aperture.
The internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary, to easily allow for filters, such as polarizing filters.
This lens is very nice for low light applications and it incorporates UD glass to improve its performance.
If you require a mid range focal length, zoom lens with a large aperture of f/2.8, then this this lens is probably the one for you.
The f/2.8 aperture of this lens will enable you to operate in reasonably low light levels and also enable you to use creative selective focus techniques to help isolate you subject in your images to give your imaged a more stunning appearance.
If you do not go for this lens, then the alternatives are really zoom lenses with larger apertures of f/5.6 and these types of lenses do not give the same flexibility for use in low light and for creative techniques. I do not really like the f/5.6 lenses at this focal length so go for this f/2.8 zoom.
This lens is an L-series lens so is of the highest Canon quality.
I love this type of lens for travelling, there are lighter and smaller lenses but they will not necessarily give the same image performance for advanced photographers.
If you are aiming for the highest image quality, then either go for this lens, or the other high quality image solution is to go for several large aperture zoom lenses such as three primes lenses in the same range of 24mm, 50mm and 85mm. The prime solution may be more expensive and not so convenient to use but it does give another option to obtain the highest quality images.
Choosing the best lenses for your photography is a complex task and you need to consider the many different operating conditions you will be photographing in, some of which I have summarised below.
- Existing light levels.
- Primes or zooms.
- Largest apertures of your lenses, f/1.4. f/2.8 or f/5.6.
- What you prefer for convenience.
