Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Autofocus Telephoto Lens
The Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Autofocus Telephoto Lens is an excellent lens choice if you are photographing close up critters which may easily be frightened away if you approach too close. I love this lens for small insects and find it superb for subjects such as butterflies and dragon flies.
The EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Autofocus Lens will facus from 1x to infinity. Three UD glass elements are included to correct any chromatic aberrations.
There is a manual focus ring and the lens which provides internal focusing which results in the lens length not changing during focussing, also the front element will not rotate during focussing.
Of all the focal length Macro lenses I prefer a lens of around 10-200mm such as this one. It is such a flexible focal length for small critters and also for small to large animals and, for some of the larger species of birds where you can get close.
Canon have a large range of Macro lenses from 50mm to 180mm and you need to choose what focal length you want, this may depend on several factors such as the working distance to the subject. If you use flash, a longer working distance may be required to place the flash units or you may be photographing shy creatures which require a longer focal length t0 keep your distance.
A summary of the range of Macro lenses is covered in the following:
- EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro – Compact Macro Normal Autofocus Lens and Canon Life-Size Converter EF
- MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro – Manual Focus Lens with 5 times magnification
- EF 100mm f/2.8 USM – Macro Telephoto Lens
- EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM – Telephoto Macro Lens
